Lets start off by opening a new document with a background of #3e3e3e, any size will do, but the bigger the better, you will see why later on in the tutorial.

Select you text tool with a large fat font, for this tutorial I have used Berlin Sans FB, and type something in the centre of your document.

Right, now that you have done that we are going to add a layer style t the text.

For convenience I have the images here for you to copy. I have resized them to fit on this page, click on the images for larger views…

Go ahead and apply these settings.

Inner Glow:

Bevel and Emboss:

Contour:

Gradient Overlay:

Stroke:

Once those settings have been applied, you should have something similar to this.

For this next step, yu will see why I said that a bigger the document the better.

Before we begin this step, you will need to download a brush set that I found here, take a momet to download and load it into PhotoShop.

Once you have done that, create a new layer and select Black as your foreground color, then with select a newly loaded brush secected, start to do random brush strokes over tour text, but dont go overboard with this.

Here is a what mine looks like at this point.

Dont worry if it looks a bit hideous, we will be cleaning it up in a second.

Now to “clean” it up, Ctrl + click on the text thumbnail on the layers pallett, this will make a selection of the text. With this secected, go to Select – Inverse (Shift+Ctrl+I).

So it looks like this…

At this point make sure that your layer that you added the brush strokes to is selected, once it is, hit the Delete key. Deselect the selection by pressing Ctrl+D.

Your text should be coming along lovely now, here is mine at tis point.

Lets give our text that real decaying feel to it shall we. Again we are going to add a layer style with a few settings, so here we go…

Bevel and Emboss:

Satin:

Color Overlay:

Apply that style and set the Fill of this layer to 25% and the Mode to Linear Burn.

Now go to Image-Adjustments-Hue/Saturation. At this point it i down to you to play around with this as each font will have different settings.

As a guide, Here are the settings I used on mine.

With all o this done, your end result should be quite “decayed”

Now to get the funky dragon scaled effect, apply the following layer effects..

Step 1

Open the picture you want to add the water drops top, I have selected this one

Step 2

One your image is open, create a new layer(Shift+Ctrl+N) and name it droplets and fill it with black using the paint bucket tool(G).

Step 3

Now the fun part starts, select Filter =>
Render => Fibres

and use the settings below.

Step 4

Select Filter => Texture => Stained Glass and apply the settings below.

Step 5

Just one more filter needs to be applied, use the settings below.

Step 6

Now select the Magic Wand Tool(W) and make sure the foreground is black, tolerance is set at 32 and contiguous is checked. Once selected, click on the black area on the droplets layer. This will select all the black and leave the droplets. now delete the selected by pressing the delete key on you keyboard.

Step 7

Deselect by pressing Ctrl+D and set the droplets layer to overlay and the opacity to 75%, you should have something like this…

Step 8

The last thing we do is add a Layer Mask and select the Brush Tool(B), again, make sure the foreground is black. With the appropriate brush size, erase the unwanted droplets.

Make a new document, any size doesn’t matter. I used 300px by 300px for this tutorial.

Start off by selecting your text, Preferably a thick one as seen below.

Right, once you have your text layer, duplicate it, we come back to this layer later in the tutorial..

We are going to be adding a few layer effects to the bottom text layer.

So here we go…

Drop Shadow..

Inner Shadow..

Outer Glow..

Contour..

Color Overlay..

Apply these settings and you should have something like this..

As we can see, it doesnt look that great.. But as we all know, its the end result that is what we wait for..

Lets push on..

Select the top text layer in your layers pallet and apply the following layer effects..

Drop Shadow..

Bevel and Emboss..

Contour..

Satin..

Stroke..

Apply the settings and set the Fill of this layer to 50%. You should have something that looks like this..

To start off, I have a new document. 400px by 400px filled with a black background.

Use the text tool, and type the text you want the effect to be applied to. I have used the word Sky for this tutorial.

This is where the tutorial gets tricky. Ok, first lower the FILL of the text to 0%, so it is effectively invisible. This is NOT the Opacity, just the Fill.

Apply a Drop Shadow to the text layer with the following settings:

To the same layer, apply an Inner Glow with the following settings:

And now add a Bevel And Emboss effect with these settings:

Apply the settings and duplicate the text layer. Disable all the effects, and apply the following Bevel And Emboss settings:

Now add a contour with these settings:

Apply the settings and duplicate this layer. Now remove the contour for this new layer, and apply these settings to the Bevel And Emboss menu:

Apply and you should have something like this:

What is great about this text is it is transparent. For the last step find an image you want to use as a background. I have made a a cloudy sky with a bit of glare from the sun. This was dome using Cloud render with a gradient layer mask removing the clouds from the top left. the sun glare is a simple lens flare.

Here is another example using another font and backgroung.

Hint: From my playing around with this, I suggest using a fat or bold font as the results are more pleasing.

Firstly, open a new document (800px x 880px) withn a backgroung color of #444444

Using the Rectangle Tool, draw a rectangle, with the came color as the background, in the centre of your page. once tis is done, apply the following stroke to this layer.

You sould have something that looks like this…

Now what we want to do is draw another rectangle inside this box we have just completed, I have chosen the color #888888. It should look like this.

Now, we are going to use the Ellipse Tool and draw an oval over the top left corner, I used #e9a0b2 as my color of choice. Once you have done that, rasterize the layer. Now here come a slightly tricky part, Ctrl click on the thumbnail of the inner box we have just created to select it, then press Shift + Ctrl + I to inverse the selection, with the oval layer still active hit Delete. This should remove all of the oval we drew except for the section inside of the inner box. One last thing to do is to set the opacity of this layer down to about 25%. I have added a white to black linear gradient stroke to mine just to add a bit of depth, you can play around with this if you wish.

Now, repeat the above step agan, only draw you oval in the bottom right corner. Your end result should be similar to this.

In the next step we are going to be adding 2 lines above the inner box, the first line is 1px which runs the entire length of the top edge, the second is a slightly thicker line that is slightly shorter than the first. Once this is done, add the following gradient overlay to these lines.

This layer style makes the lines almost seem to vanish into thin air. Your result should look similar to the image below.

Next we are going to be creating the conten boxes or tabs..

Right, lets press on, select the Rounded Rectangle Tool and set the radius to 7px. I used the same color as the background, #444444, draw a rectangle the size that you like, then rasterize the layer. Ctrl click on the layer thumbnail to select it and then go to Select – Modify – Contract and set this setting to about 3px (set it higher if you want your lines thicker), once you see that the selection has been contracted, press delete. This will remove te centre of this rectangle. Now apply a layer mask to this layer and using the Gradient Tool, with a black to while gradient, hold Shift and drag your gradient from left to right inside the rectangle. You will end up with this.

That is pretty much the basic layout, now its time to add a few finishing touches, I wont tellt you any more, it’s now time for your imagination to take effect…

In this tutorial I will be using a picture of the ever gorgeous Heather Graham.

Step 1

Open up your image into photoshop, duplicate your image in the layers window then goto “filter > artistic > poster edges”. Use standard settings, press ok. Then lighten the image abit by going to “image adjustments > brightness & contrast” increase the brighness by about 10-15 pixels and increase the contrast by about 25-30 pixels. (settings depends on type of image, lightness etc… you may not get the same result as mine)

Step 2

Now goto “filter > artistic > cutout”. At this point you will have to play around with the settings to archeve the right effect, here is my final result.

1. Open a new document. Set
width/height to 400×250 for a good working area.

2. Fill the
background color to a dark color. In this tutorial, we’ll use a dark
green (Hex Color #054a00).

3. Create a new layer. Name it
“Oval”.

4. Select the Elipse tool. Make sure in the options bar,
it is set to “Fill Pixels”.

5. Select black as your
foreground color.

6. Create a black oval shape.

7. Select the
Eliptical Marquee tool.

8. Create an oval
selection inside the oval shape.

9. Click the Delete key. You
should have a shape like the following:

10. Click Ctrl+D to
deselect.

11. Right click the “Oval” layer in the layers palette.
Select “Blending Options…” from the pop-up list.

12. Set the
properties for “Drop Shadow” to the following:

13. Set the properties for
“Inner Glow” to the following:

14. Set the properties for
“Bevel and Emboss” to the following:

15. Set the properties for
“Satin” to the following:

17. Click OK to close out and
return to image.

18. Create a new layer
underneath the “Oval” layer. Name it “Backdrop”.

Eliptical Marquee tool.

20. Create an
oval selection over the hole in the center of the donut
shape.

21. Select the Paint Bucket tool.

22. Fill the selection
with a light color (on the “Backdrop” layer). In this tutorial,
we’ll use a lighter green (Hex Color #0ba200).

23. Click Ctrl+D to
deselect.

24. Create a new layer above the “Oval” layer. Name it
“Hole”.

25. Select the Elipse tool. Make sure in the options bar,
it is set to “Fill Pixels”.

26. Select a light grey as
your foreground color. In this tutorial: (Hex Color #c8c8c8).

27.
Create a small grey circle over the fat part of the donut shape.
Hold down the SHIFT key as you create the circle so that it makes a
perfectly round circle.

28. Right click the “Hole”
layer in the layers palette. Select “Blending Options…” from the
pop-up list.

29. Set the properties for “Inner Shadow” to the
following:

34. Create a new layer above

Select a button color as your foreground color. In this tutorial:
(Hex Color #0ba200).

37. Create a small circle over the hole for
your button. Hold down the SHIFT key as you create the circle so
that it makes a perfectly round circle.

38. Right click the “Button”
layer in the layers palette. Select “Blending Options…” from the
pop-up list.

39. Set the properties for “Drop Shadow” to the
following:

Set the properties for “Bevel and Emboss” to the
following:

Click OK to close out and return to image.

42. Merge the “Button” and
“Hole” layers so that it is one single layer.

43. Select the Move
tool.

44. Hold
down the ALT key while dragging to create a duplicate button to
place on your oval interface.

45. Do Step 44 again to create
another button for your interface.

If you desire, you can paste an image over the “Backdrop” layer for a different effect. Just erase any part of the photograph that goes beyond the border of the interface.

Lets begin, open a new document and secect the Ellipse Tool (U) and set the color to #2f1600 with this done, draw a decent sized slightly oval circle in the centre of your document, like mine below.

With this done, Rasterize the layer and add a 2px black stroke to it. This makes the following steps easier to see what you are doing.

Now duplicate the layer and fill it using the Paint Bucket Tool with the color of #754b02. Select the Move Tool (V), with the new layer active, we are are going to “squash” it inwards from both the left and right side. It should look similar to this…

We are now going to repeat the last step we just did two more times, but changing the colors to #915b04 and #9f530a respectively. Your end result should look like this.

Ok, I agree, it doesnt look much like a pumpkin yet, but wait, we arent done yet.

In this step, we will be adding its “hair” so to speak. Use the Rectangle Tool and draw a rectangle near the top of your pumpkin. Something like this…

We are now going to give it a bit of shape, I think that seems a little bland like that. To do this we go to Filter-Liquify, at this point, PhotoShop will ask you if you want to rasterize the shape, click ok and have fun distorting your shape to your satisfaction. Apply the filter and add a 2px stroke to it. We should have this…

With this done, we need to bring this pumpkin to life, it needs eyes and a mouth.

Set your color to a nice shade of yellow, I chose #eaff00. Using the Pen Tool, draw a triangle for one eye, duplicate the layer and we want to flip the duplicated layer, go to Edit-Transform-Flip Horizontal. Use the Move Tool and move it across to where you want the second eye to be placed.

Now do the same process over again, but instead of a triangle, give your pumpkin a scary zig-zag mouth, like mine…

Now we add the following layer style to the eyes and mouth.

Inner Shaddow:

Outer Glow:

Stroke:

Apply these settings and you will get something simiar to the image below..

Select the Burn Tool and with one of the oval layers active, lightly brush over the edges of each oval, pay more attention to the top and bottom, this will give it a more 3D look. Do this to all the oval layers. You can use the Dodge Tool to lighten the color in some areas if you wish.

This is my Final result…

Now its down to you how you would like to use your scary halloween pumpkin.

When the levels window opens up drag the small arrow in the middle to the right. You should end up with smething that looks like this:

Now go to “Filter > Blur > Motion Blur” set amount of pixels to 999 and set the Angle to what you fancy, I have used -50

Once applied, apply the filter effect again and you should have something that looks similar to this:

Now lets add some color, press “Ctrl + U “ put a tick in the colorize box at the bottom then use the sliders to select your color.

Now duplicate your layer and set the new layer to “Color Dodge” you might find the color to be abit bright, like the one below, you have two options you can use.

Option 1 – Select the duplicated layer and press “Ctrl + U “ put a tick in the Colorize box at the bottom then use the sliders to select your color that you like. Here is an example using Hue Saturation on the duplicated layer.

Option 2 – Select the duplicated layer and press “Ctrl + L “ to open the Levels box , slide the middle slider to select te color that you like
. Here is an example using Levels on the duplicated layer.
